Our Curriculum

Because the breadth of Tong Moo Do as a style is so large, it is imperative that our curriculum is structured in a way that maximizes our student’s abilities to learn and master the various aspects of the martial arts.

We are currently in our third generation of our colour belt curriculum. Through much research and innovation we have developed a curriculum that is age appropriate, level specific, and presents a balance of the different aspects of the martial arts.

Age Appropriate

Not only are our classes divided into different age groups, the curriculum for each class has been customized to meet the needs and abilities of each age group as well. Our curricula accommodate learning abilities, physical development, and even the common self defense scenarios that may arise for each age group.

Level Specific

Our classes are also divided by level to ensure that all students are learning level specific material. This allows students to be consistently challenged without overwhelming them with material that is far beyond their respective level. A curriculum that is not level specific can leave new students feeling over whelmed while leaving experienced students bored and unchallenged.

Balance

There are three main groups of martial art styles that exist.

  • Sport based arts focus mainly on the training aspect of the martial arts. The benefit to this approach is that students learn to apply the techniques very efficiently while getting a great workout.
  • Self defense based arts focus on the techniques which can be readily applied to a situation outside of the school context in which students may need to defend themselves.
  • Self development based styles focus on the “art” aspect of the martial arts. These martial arts focus on developing oneself as a person and using the martial arts as a form of expression as well.

Our curriculum seeks to balance all three aspects of martial arts training so that our students can benefit from each.
