General Information

To help you understand our school better here is some general information. We hope that this information will be helpful to you however if you ever have any questions about our school, please feel free to email us.

General Rules

  • All students salute the flags when entering or leaving the school.

  • Students greet their instructors, black belts and Grandmaster by bowing.

  • Students must maintain a positive and respectful attitude at all times.

  • Students must not use any profanity or offensive language.

  • Food, drinks, candy, gum etc, are not allowed in the training area.

  • Students with higher belts are expected to help lower belts and answer any questions.

  • Students are not allowed to wear jewellery, watches, necklaces etc. during class time. Long Hair must be tied back.

  • Students must wear uniforms and belts when training. Street clothes are not allowed. Shoes must never be on the mat.

  • Uniforms must be kept clean and school crest worn.

  • Students are expected to help keep their school as clean as possible.

Tip Test & Belt Promotions

Tip Tests are held once every two months. Students will be tested on their current curriculum. In order to test the student must not have missed more than 4 classes since their last tip test. If the student has passed their test, they receive a stripe on their belt. If the student receives 2 stripes then the student will attend their Belt Promotion test.

Testing Fees

There are no testing fees for the tip tests or for the belt promotion for all colour belt levels. If the student does receive a new belt at the belt promotion, there is a small cost for their belts of $8.00 each. ($10.00 for brown striped belts). There are testing fees at the black belt level.

Belts

The belt system is as follows:

  • White

  • Yellow

  • Green

  • Blue

  • Purple

  • Red

  • Brown

  • Brown with Yellow Stripe

  • Brown with Green Stripe

  • Brown with Blue Stripe

  • Brown with Red Stripe

  • Brown with Black Stripe

  • Black

Make-Up/Open Classes

If the students are unable to attend their regular class time, open/make-up classes can be attended. Open classes gives the student an oppertunity to make-up missed classes, get extra practice and to learn new techniques.

Sparring Gear

Tong Moo Do carries fine quality sparring gear at a discounted price, as well as various equipment and clothing to fit all your martial art needs. We can also special order products from our suppliers.

Adult Students
Upon entering Level One, adult students must have boxing gloves and shin/instep pads. Upon entering Level Two, students must have a chest protector, and all male students must have an athletic supporter. Upon entering Level Three, students must have Mixed Martial Art (MMA) gloves, head gear and mouth guard.

Adult students will do various kinds of sparring such as Point Sparring, Continuous Sparring, Padded Weapons Sparring, Boxing, Kickboxing, Grappling and MMA Sparring. These classes are designed to correspond with the students' current curriculum. They will effictively enhance their training and understanding with the martial arts and are taught in a safe and positive environment.

Complete sparring gear for each level must be brought to sparring classes. Sparring classes for adult students are held once a week.

Children & Junior Students
Upon entering Level Two, children and junior students must have a sparring gloves, shin/instep pads, chest protector, and all male students must have an athletic supporter. Upon entering Level Three, students must have head gear and mouth guard.

Children and junior students will do various kinds of sparring such as Point Sparring, Padded Weapons Sparring, Boxing (Junior students only), Kickboxing(Junior students only) and Grappling.

Complete sparring gear for each level must be brought to sparring classes. Sparring classes for children and junior students are held during the two classes after tip testing week. Starting in September 2007, the classes will be held once a week.

Holidays

Tong Moo Do Martial Arts will be closed on all statutory holidays and for a short period over Chistmas & New Years. We are also open during Spring break and all throughout the Summer.

Uniforms

Tong Moo Do uniforms and belts must be worn when training. The school crest must be purchased and worn on the jacket. All other patches and flags are optional. Student may wear a Tong Moo Do T-Shirt in place of the jacket during classes. Students must wear their full uniform (jacket and pants) during Tip Tests & Belt Promotions.

In Level One the uniform is white pants and white uniform jacket. An optional Level One t-shirt may be worn.

In Level Two the uniform is black pants and white uniform jacket. An optional Level Two t-shirt may be worn.

In Level Three the uniform is white pants and white uniform jacket. An optional Level Three t-shirt may be worn.

In Level Four and higher (Black Belt level) the uniform is black pants and black uniform jacket.

Black Belt Ceremony

We have two major school events every year both of which are Black Belt Ceremonies. In the fall a banquet is held to honour any new Black Belts and in the spring a theatre show is held. All students’ family and friends of the school are invited to attend these events.

SWAT

SWAT is our team of trained and certified instructors who help lead and run the school. Each Instructor participates in a weekly training session designed to increase their effectiveness on curriculum presentation for various learning styles, dynamic speaking, safety and skills development.
